5 of 5 Real Pilates adapted for the ball April 28, 2009
Reviewer: RedPanda from Australia
In this DVD, Lara Hudson has developed an effective routine with creative moves based on Pilates; the exercises don't feel contrived at all. This is one of those workouts that sneaks up on you - you may not feel like you're doing much at the time, but it's a different story afterwards! I found the "Upper Body" segment a bit too easy, but the "Lower Body" and "Total Body Pilates" were a different story!  The "Flexibility" segment is particularly good; I appreciate that Lara focuses on stretching the hip flexors which tend to get overworked in Pilates. This segment also makes a good stretch after other workouts. Lara is an encouraging instructor with a nice personality.  Like the other "10 Minute Solutions" DVDs, this one is fully programmable which is always a bonus. I would recommend this DVD to intermediate/advanced Pilates practitioners.

5 of 5 Wonderful! April 23, 2009
Reviewer: Fit Diva from Madison, WI
About me: I'm a fitness instructor who teaches dance-based classes but enjoys functional strength training and bodyweight exercises. Usually, I find that workouts using the ball tend to engage in gratuitous use of the ball (e.g. holding the ball overhead just to say you used it). Lara has none of that--I thought the exercises were well thought out and sequenced. I especially liked the upper body section--this is one area where ball workouts often miss the mark. There were some great exercises for the upper body--I felt worked in 10 minutes for sure! There are some twists on upper body exercises that are fun, yet tough. I also liked the lower body section as well. Lara does some good exercises for the inner thighs that incorporate the glutes as well. The abs workout was hard to me, but I just rode my bike for 2-hours yesterday! The total body pilates section was my least favorite, but it was still a well-done segment that focused a bit more on abs and lower body. I really liked the swan dives at the end. The flexibility section has some nice hip openers (always a plus for me) and stretches for the upper body. In all, this workout gets an A+ from me.  I would not recommend this for beginners because Lara moves quickly from exercise to exercise (although not too fast) and doesn't give a lot of breakdown. Also, though there aren't a huge amount of reps, some of the exercises would be too challenging for a beginner. However, her form tips, instruction and cueing are wonderful. I think that intermediate exercisers would really enjoy this one, as well as advanced exercisers looking to incorporate more bodyweight work into their routines. This is good workout for folks that don't really like pilates, since Lara incorporates interesting variations inspired by mat and reformer work. In fact, Lara has a lot of 'twists' on exercises that I haven't seen before--and innovation is always a plus for me. This workout moved really quickly and it was actually fun!

5 of 5 It's a Favorite November 18, 2008

This is my favorite stability ball workout. Lara Hudson presents a challenging workout yet gives excellent form pointers. I like the option of mixing & matching or doing the entire workout. I normally don't get muscle soreness after a workout but I felt it in my glutes and hamstrings the next day. There are some interesting twists in each segment. And I found the upper body segment challenging with all weight bearing work. It's a keeper!
