Basic Step: This workout was designed to help the exerciser that is new to Cathe and to step aerobics . Basic Step is a 35 minute basic step routine that will hold the interest and truly challenge the beginner stepper for many workouts to come and is the official training DVD for all Step Company steps . While creating this workout, I made sure that basic steps were introduced, taught and put into combinations in a way that made the beginner have to focus and think, but not overwhelm them. Unlike teaching a live beginner class where each and every workout can change to provide further challenge to the participant, a DVD workout does not have that flexibility. For this reason, I have chosen to teach the moves but not over teach them, thereby giving the beginner stepper a new challenge to work towards every time they do the workout.

Body Fusion: It is approximately a 50 minute workout which is formatted as follows: Warm up Step combo #1 Weight segment #1 Step Combo #2 Weight Segment #2 Step Combo #3 Weight Segment #3 Stretch After the warm up you will go into your first step aerobic segment which features moves from videos past taught with a longer breakdown and more repetition than the other two upcoming step combos since you are just freshly out of the warm up. This segment is about 10 minutes long. Now your first weight segment will do squats with overhead presses and lunges with side and front lateral raises for approximately 5 minutes (light breaks in between). Step combo two is a little more complex than one but still on the level of intermediate. It again is about 10 minutes long and features moves from other videos. Weight segment two features lunges off the back of the step and then later bicep curls standing on the floor. The biceps curls end with a little balance option of doing them while standing on one leg. Step Combo #3, totaling about 8 minutes, is the same level of complexity as two but has more intensity added. Weight segment three includes deadrows and deadlifts and then moves onto dips and push ups before completing with a stretch.

I must admit I had my doubts about step routines but this is wonderful. I have been doing this the past couple of weeks and have finally went over my plateau. I love the add on part with exercise tubing and weights. This is a great overall workout. I really sweat with this! Overall great workout. I love Cathe. She really motivates me and I is very safety conscious.

4 of 5 Good beginner workouts July 10, 2014

I would classify this as "Cathe-Beginner" workouts.  Easy choreography, lower impact and shorter in length.  I am currently more advanced, but am keeping this video for lighter days or when I need something easier.

5 of 5 Great workout for this beginner! November 17, 2008
Reviewer: nikkia2112 from Georgia
I am just getting back to working out after a few years of laziness.  I've recently lost 35 lbs by reducing calories and walking/jogging my  neighborhood.  Since the weather is getting colder and the days are getting shorter I thought I'd give some step aerobics a try.  I've never liked step aerobics because I have two left feet and feel like a fool trying to keep up.

After reading about the awesome reviews of Cathe Friedrich videos, I thought I'd give her a try.  Whoa!  She's tough...too tough for me right now.  BUT this Basic Step video is just right.  At first, I couldn't complete the Body Fusion portion of the DVD.  So I decided to stick with the Basic Step portion coupled with a 20 min. lower or upper body segment until I built up  more endurance and coordination. The moves are very easy to follow and Cathe's cues are right on.  After a few weeks I tried the Body Fusion sectioin again, and I was able to complete it without falling over and giving up.

I've been using this DVD for a couple of months now, and I am really seeing good results!  Cathe has a new fan, and I can't wait to try some of her more challenging videos. With the help of Basic Step, I hope to be ready soon!
